Beauty Behind Being Old

Bahamian Old People: Old Crayons Still Color

In the Bahamas, our grand parents are our first set of parents. A massive number of time is spent with either your grand parents or great grand parents. I want to take a personal curve with this portion of my blog. Indeed, “old people” is definitely a topic I can talk about all day.

This portion of my blog is inspired because of my amazing great grand parents! A picture of them is inserted below!

As a child, I took care of my great- grand parents. I would bathe them, sing to them, clean their bed soars, feed them through feeding tubes and give them all my time before their demise. Indeed, the elderly generation will always be held adjacent to my heart.

“Age has no reality except in the physical world. The essence of a human being is resistant to the passage of time. Our inner lives are eternal, which is to say that our spirits remain as youthful and vigorous as when we were in full bloom.”

― Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Are your tastebuds aroused?

Imagine ordering a caramel Frappuccino without it having the coffee. Can you taste the bland sensation? How about indulging into a Supreme meat lovers pizza, however, there is no crust! My tastebuds are already crying because of the displeasure. Did you manage to figure out the idea I am pointing to? The coffee and pizza both need a foundation. This foundation makes it complete. The foundation to your house has a concrete base. I can imagine the construction workers putting their maximum strength into mixing the cement. Every house needs an infrastructure, the Frapuccino needs coffee, the pizza needs crust and every country needs a foundation. The foundation of a country is what makes it unique and stand out from the rest of the world.

Let the journey begin..

I want to take you on a journey of the raw Bahama Land. Join me on this extravagant adventure! Let us take a walk down memory lane. Bahamians love to eat, therefore, our story begins with food and economy. The average meal the older generation prepared, consisted of fruits and vegetables, meat or fish, bread, and rice.

Persons who lived on islands other than the capital consumed more fresh fruit, vegetables, and fish. Money was aved by our ancestros. The older generation always made a way of life using inexpensive means.”Heritage foods” is the label given to food prepared back in the day by grammy and grandpa. Our grandmothers and grandfathers spent time on the farm, fishing and in the straw market. This is the initial form of income for Bahamian families.

LOOK AND SEE FOR YOURSELF!

The journey continues..

The Bahamian music being broadcasted today, originated from the souls of our Bahamian ancestors. The “Baha Men” is a music group, “King Eric Gibson” was an entrepreneur and musician. Etta Cameron was a jazz singer. She was based in Denmark and a frontrunner of the Danish 1970s and 1980s music scene. If the topic is changed from music, religion is an important aspect in Bahamian history. The older generation had a distinct admiration for religion and church. It was imperative any church services were not missed. This weekly tradition of attending church was passed down from our great- grand parents way down to the young generation.  Today, there is no excuse for not giving devotion to God or the religion you serve.

The elderly population of The Bahamas, shaped our culture and way of life. They instilled a hardworking, devoted and courageous spirit into their children. These positive attributes were carried on and passed down to generations to come. The Bahamas is the majestic place today because of the sacrifice from our ancestors. There was heart given to ensuring the future families would too have a prosperous way of life.
